Just in case anyone's interested, I'm placing my next kiriban (Single Char Lineart + possiblity of color) at 15,000 pageviews. Just a fun little thing to celebrate a milestone, and it's always fun to draw other characters. Just note me with a screenie or something of that sort. If you've looked through my gallery at all, you probably know my strengths and weaknesses when it comes to characters to draw, so just keep in mind that if you have a character that falls under the "simplistic/clean clothing, and female" category, it'll prolly turn out better than a complicated mecha-macho man.

Think of the children - Saphire's macho men are creepy surfer dudes with painted on abs.

In other news, currently "cleaning" out my gallery of 4+years old art, with exceptions being made for certain pieces I still like. Just moving them all into scrapbook, though. I still like being able to go through them and say "wow, look how much I've improved!" but I don't want them to be displayed with my newer pieces either. They're like the box full of old sketchbooks that I have in my closet - fun to have and look through every year or so, but you don't want to rip out the pages and post them all over your wall.

Anywho, I'd probably think of a few more things to say, but my computer's spazzing out every 10 seconds so I think I better turn off my music+firefox+WoW+GIMP and give it a rest. Agree? :)

I've heard that the newest version is pretty different from the older versions that I've done tutorials with. If you can be more specific about the issues you're facing I can do my best to help you out, but if you're looking for general drawing-with-GIMP tips, here are the ones I have to offer--

1. When working on something, save as a .xcf or .psd. This will preserve layers and quality when you need to work on it later. Once you're finished with a project, save as a .jpg or .png to post on Deviantart or similar sites.
2. Always keep a copy of the original file on hand. It doesn't matter if you duplicate the original layer or have it as a completely separate file, but it really sucks if you're working on something and mess it up and you don't have a backup to fix it.
3. Learn how to use layers as soon as you can. They can be tricky at first, but with a bit of experience it'll make your life with GIMP a lot easier.

Well this is pretty much the first time I've ever tried doing art on a computer, do I need to buy a tablet to make things work? is there any way to get something I've drawn, (like a certain character) and have the computer put into a comic at different angles? how do I get panels to go in a certain order?

Do you know what the animation thing on gimp is and how it works?

First question: No, you don't need a tablet to make things work. Most of my early work was done without a tablet, and there are some fantastic artists who are able to do magic with a mouse. However, in my opinion, a tablet makes drawing and coloring on a computer MUCH MUCH EASIER. But it's not necessary, and if you don't have the ~80$ to blow on one, dont' worry too much about it.

Second: If you're talking about drawing a character front-view or something, and then being able to tell the computer to make it into a side view or a rear view of the same character, unless you're working in a 3D rendering program it can't do it.

Third: Panels will go in any order that you tell them to go in. In the few comics I've done, I've drawn out every panel in my sketchbook, scanned them into my computer, then made boxes in a page-size in GIMP (I like to work in 5x7 now, but sometimes I would do 8x10 or something like that) and inserted my scanned drawings into the boxes, erasing outside the boxes to make it clean (or erasing the boxes and let the image go full-bleed.

And last: I've done little GIF animations in GIMP, stuff similar to flash animations and such. I'm not sure if I ever used the built-in animation thing in GIMP, though - if my memory serves right, it was typically a way to convert an image into a spinning globe or something to that effect. If you're looking to do animations, you'll either have to do it the old-fashioned way (drawing out the frames, ~8 frames per second for saturday-morning cartoon quality) or get and learn Flash.

No problem - you have some fantastic art, and I love how you've been doing some stuff reminiscent of Alphonse Mucha and the whole art nouveau movement. It's really lovely stuff. Keep it up!
